While Steele Creek is poised for a vibrant future, it is anchored by a long and relevant past. Historians believe the region was settled in the late-1600s or early-1700s by Scot-Irish immigrants. These settlers were attracted to the abundance of animal and plant life. The influence of these first residents is still visible today in the historic Presbyterian churches that dot the landscape. Steele Creek’s entrance into the modern era is marked by the establishment of the Catawba Hydroelectric Station in 1904. The station along would provide power for thousands of residents. It also created Lake Wylie, the area’s largest recreation site. Lake Wylie’s water surface sprawls over more than 13,440 acres and its shoreline stretches over 325 miles. Today’s Steele Creek is characterized by a good mix of residential and industrial/business districts. Industrial areas are located at Westinghouse Boulevard and the S. Tryon Street Corridor. Residential neighborhoods are interspersed throughout Steele Creek, but development is concentrated near Interstate 77 and the new I-485 beltway on the western edge of the community. |
